Watchmaker Accepts Cheese as Payment

In a bizarre business move, a watchmaker from Rotherham has taken the decision to accept cheese as payment for his services.

John Bakker, 59, owner of 'Make Time' watchmakers, has seen his loyal customer base dwindle as technology takes over from traditional time pieces.

"There was a time when people would actively avoid seeing the time anywhere but on their own watch", said Bakker.

"People just wouldn't believe the time unless it had come from their very own watch. However, I am seeing now that people are taking liberties with their timekeeping, and choosing instead to trust the technology around them, such as phones", continues the watchmaker, clearly exasperated at the risks taken by the public.

This switch in 'time loyalty' has led to a dramatic fall in sales for Bakker, and his trade on the whole.

In 2004, Make Time saw sales to as many as 4 people a day, sometimes more. However, latest reports show that Bakker has not sold a single watch, or even serviced one, for over 3 months,

This has led him to make the tricky decision to switch from cash to cheese as a form of payment.

His decision is part of a two-pronged strategy being employed by the businessman.

"Firstly, I hope that cheese will be more readily available to the public, increasing their willingness to use my services" says Bakker.

He continues, "Secondly, a man needs to eat. I have been living on beans and bread for 2 months now, and a nice slice of Red Leicester would really spice things up at the dinner table".

Now, only time will tell (pun intended) if this bold business move will pay off for Make Time, or if it will fall on deaf ears, ultimately ensuring more bread and beans for the experienced watchmaker.
