She may be known for her voracious style of activism, a truly influential voice in the war on climate change, but UK retailers are praising Greta Thunberg for more than just her approach to the environment.
Yes, she has a distinct personality, but on top of this, she has a very distinct style too. Often seen sporting a full length rain coat (regardless of the weather), it seems that she is having a big impact on the fashion choice of the nation too.
In a recent interview, Martin Comber, director of financials at UKRA (UK Retailer Association), has announced that there has been a spike in sales of raincoats in the last six months.
Speaking to a national publication, Mr. Comber said that despite the expected boom in sales, many members of the union are attributing additional sales to Greta's infectious personality.
"At this time of year it is expected that retailers will see a rise in coat sales. With the weather being what it is, it makes sense that consumers are heading towards the coat sections in many shops.
"However, many of our members are reporting higher than average sales, often as high as a 20% increase. It hasn't gone unnoticed that this spike in sales has coincided with Greta's recent visits to the UK."
Challenged on the statistics behind the claim, Mr. Comber concedes that there is no firm evidence to link the sales increase back to the Swedish activist, but remains convinced of her impact.
"Even with the lack of data driven evidence, we can see a correlation between the style of coat being sold, and the style that Greta favours. The feedback we are receiving from our members suggests a close match."
It may seem extreme for an activist to influence fashion, but it is 2020, and the world as a whole is much more awake to the risks the environment currently faces.
This new world attitude, often referred to as 'woke', mixed with the younger generation's embrace of celebrity culture, makes the perfect case to suggest that the retailers are correct; Great Thunberg is now influencing more than just our attitude towards the environment. She is influencing our fashion choices also.
